We enthusiastically support Boy Scout involvement in the Rocky Mountain Amphibian Project!  Troops that adopt a catchment are encouraged to use this as a merit badge earning opportunity, and create as competitive or non-competitive an experience as you'd like! 

In addition to the Reptiles and Amphibians merit badge, also consider using this as way to earn part of your Hiking or Orienteering merit badges!

Don't forget to have your troop adopt a catchment!

 

Reptiles and Amphibian Merit Badge

Below we list the various aspects of this merit badge that the Rocky Mountain Amphibian Project can help with, as well as some resources that will help Scouts answer their questions.  Refer to the Boy Scouts of America website for the full list of requirements, as well as for information about other related badges.


Requirements

1a. Describe and identify characteristics of six species of reptiles and four species of amphibians found in the United States.  Discuss the habits and habitats of all 10 species.

1b. For any four of these, make sketches from your own observations or take photographs.  Show markings, color patterns, or other characteristics that are important in the identification of each of the four species.

2a. Discuss with your merit badge counselor the approximate number of species and general geographic distribution of reptiles and amphibians in the United States.

2b. Prepare a list of the most common species found in your local area or state.

 3.  Describe the main differences between amphibians and reptiles, alligators and crocodiles, toads and frogs, salamanders and lizards, and snakes and lizards.

4a. Explain how reptiles and amphibians are important components of the natural environment.

4b.  List four species that are officially protected by the federal government or by the state you live in, and tell why each is protected.

  • There is only one amphibian protected by the state and federal government.  Find which one it is

4c. List three species of reptiles and three species of amphibians found in your local area that are not protected. 

4d. Discuss the food habits of all 10 species (4b and 4c together).

5. Describe how reptiles and amphibians reproduce.
